Hand Made Native American Apache Indian Burden Baskets
Burden baskets are one of the most recognized works of art of Native American peoples. They were once used in everyday life for collecting, gathering and storing foods. It was usually the larger burden baskets that was used for food storage and they are still used today! A burden basket is a cone shaped hand made basket. Leather and cone jingles hang down from them. Almost all burden baskets have a leather strap for hanging or wearing around the neck or shoulders. AS the basket was worn the tine cones would jingle and this would scare away animals such as snakes. Many times, smaller burden baskets were given to children to wear for protection as the jungles would scare off animals and the sound would alert parents to where their children were located. These baskets are often hung outside a home and a caller was to place his "burdens" inside the basket before entering. The saying, “leave your burdens at the door” originated with these baskets.

Spirit Walker Fine Art Book - JD Challenger and His Art
The images of Native Americans by JD Challenger are among the most popular paintings and prints being collected today. Spirit Walker, JD Challenger and His Art features more than one hundred paintings made during the past decade and brought together here for the first time. The book includes extensive commentary by E. Dan Klepper, who has collaborated with Challenger for many years. The text tells the story of the painter and his work and offers insights into its creation.
Flint Carney, Tui-Bi-Tsi(Handsome Heart) of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma, says this about Challenger: "Scholars of American History are not contemplating the ways in which Indian culture influenced the development of a national character that is uniquely American. JD’s work captures that connection. His uncanny mixture of symbols from two worlds presses the viewer to look for the messages that might be found there. It’s as if he is saying, "I don’t necessarily want you to think what I think. I just want you to think."
"JD understands as well the phenomenon of the Ghost Dance experience and the environment in which it developed. There was so much despair for Indian people, and they were looking for hope. There was so much anger, and they were looking for love. Perhaps JD’s work serves as a bridge that links the past with the present, and Indian America with non-Indian. Or perhaps its value simply lies in the artist’s extraordinary talent. I do not know. What I do know is that JD is, and always will be, my brother."

Note Cards: The Ghost Dance
Ghost Dance by JD Challenger
In the late 1800s, the Ghost Dance religion promised hope and resurrection at a time when Native American nations across America faced destruction. Misunderstood by authorities, the Ghost Dance sparked the savage attack on Sioux men, women, and children at Wounded Knee in 1890. In his paintings, JD Challenger shows the strength and dignity of Native Americans as they recall this time. These fine art JD Callenger note cards are 4" x 6" and are packaged 16 cards, four different images, per box.
